Black and Latino Americans are almost twice as likely to have diabetes as white Americans, but the reasons for this difference haven’t been clearly determined. Now, a new study suggests that causes may be environmental, rather than genetic. The study, published in Diabetes Care, reexamined multiple scientific studies from the last 50 years on toxic chemicals known as endocrine-disruptors. The authors found that Black and Latino Americans are disproportionately exposed to those chemicals, which leak from gas plants and are found in in ozone pollution from cars. Read more
