Researchers have found that a protein associated with anxiety and depression may also contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. The protein, FKBP51, plays a part in the regulation of the stress system. A mutation in the gene that controls the production of FKBP51 can lead to a dysregulation of the stress system. This can cause the individual to suffer from issues such as anxiety and depression. Now researchers have found that FKBP51 is also linked to the regulation of some metabolic functions, which means it could affect the development of metabolic diseases like obesity and diabetes.
