Scientists may soon develop another alternative to the painful finger-prick blood glucose tests many people with diabetes have to endure. The new invention is a paper-strip sensor that gauges blood glucose via a patient’s saliva. When saliva is applied to the sensor, glucoseĀ in the body fluid reacts with glucose oxidase on the strip, creating an electrical signal. This signal is picked up by electrodes; the strength of the signal corresponds to the blood glucose levels of the person who supplied the saliva. Read more
