To save patients with a severe form of type 1 diabetes, pancreatic cell transplantation is a “last resort” treatment, because the process is long and complex, and many of the grafted cells die quickly. Researchers have found that adding amniotic epithelial cells to these cell clusters creates much more robust “super-islets” of Langerhans.
